KC into quarters after ‘Whisper’ inspires KC to 9-0 mauling of Jose Marti
Dujuan “Whisper” Richards netted a brilliant five-timer as defending champions Kingston College (KC) thrashed Jose Marti 9-0 in their second-leg tie in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/Digicel Manning Cup competition at the Stadium East field on Saturday.
The victory has moved KC into the quarter-final round of the competition, this after their first-leg game ended 0-0 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Wednesday.
The lanky Richards scored his goals in the second, sixth, 20th, 48th and 90th minutes. He received solid support from Jaheem Johnson who netted a brace in the 18th and 44th minute. Ashanie Kennedy (41st) and Nashordo Gibbs (58th) were the other goal scorers for the Raymond Watson-coached KC.
Richards is now the joint top-scorer in the competition, along with Mona’s Donhue Mitchell with 19 goals each.
Watson said he was very pleased with his performance, but he adds that they still have a lot left in the tank for the quarter-final round of the competition.
“I thought that we did very well,” said Watson. “We went back to the training pitch after the first-leg game because we were not mentally prepared for that game, but we came out this game and we applied ourselves and we showed what a good team we are when we are up to it,” he said.
“This is a good moral booster going into the quarter-finals because every game is a final from here and we will be prepared for it,” Watson said.
KC came out firing on all cylinders in the first half as they took the lead early when Richards fired home a curling left-footed shot past Jose Mart’s custodian Shamore Dawkins with just 80 seconds on the clock.
He doubled his team’s lead four minutes later with a powerful header from the centre of the 18-yard box.
KC, who were all over Jose Marti in the first period, went up three-nil 12-minutes later, when Johnson arrived at the back post to tap the ball into the back of the net. Richards completed his hat-trick in the 20th minute when calmly finished from 10 yards. Kennedy then added his name to the scoresheet before Johnson completed his double as KC led 6-0 half-time.
Meanwhile, in the opening match of the double-header, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) also advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition despite losing their second leg 1-0 to St Jago as the two-way tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.
STATHS secured their spot to next phase of the competition on the away goal rule after they had the first leg 2-1 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Wolmer’s also booked the place in the quarter-finals on the away rule after beating St Catherine 2-1 Saturday for 2-2 aggregate score. St Catherine won the first leg 1-0.
Jamaica College secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Norman Manley 1-0 in their second leg for a 6-0 aggregate scoreline.
