Manchester, Edwin Allen, Manning’s seize final quarter-final berths
DENBIGH, Clarendon — Dark horses Manchester High, Edwin Allen and Manning’s School completed the quarter-final qualifiers on a dramatic final day of the round of 16 in the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition on Saturday.
Two big named teams with title credentials — defending champions Garvey Maceo High and former champions Glenmuir High — were dumped out of the competition and will contest the Ben Francis Knockout.
A draw was enough for Manchester High to advance ahead of the outgoing champions, while Edwin Allen knocked out Glenmuir High with a 2-0 win to qualify ahead of them on the second tie breaker after both ended on four points and zero goal-difference.
Manning’s School, who only needed a draw, beat St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) 2-1 at Llandilo Sports Complex.
Saturday’s qualifiers will join Central High, Dinthill Technical, William Knibb Memorial, Clarendon College, and Frome Technical for the quarter-finals that are set to kick off on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Clarendon College topped Group Three after beating fellow qualifiers Frome Technical 3-0 and York Castle High came from a goal down to beat Rusea’s High 2-1 at Colin Miller Sports Complex.
At Foga Road High, central defender Kimolar Fearon scored in back-to-back games to give Edwin Allen the lead before Alwayne Bryan scored the second to hand Glenmuir their first loss of the season.
Both schools ended with four points and zero goal-difference, but Edwin Allen, who had drawn 1-1 against STETHS in midweek, had three goals to Glenmuir High’s two and joined Manning’s School who won the group with seven points.
All three goals at Llandilo came in the second half as Shamar Hamilton gave Manning’s the lead in the 55th minute and Jhamaleek Porter doubled the advantage in the 67th minute before Antwon Smith pulled one back for STETHS in the 81st minute.
Manchester High got the point they needed to knock out Garvey Maceo as they finished with five points and a plus-one goal-difference, the same as Central High, but topped Group One with four goals to Central High’s three.
Malachi Douglas gave Clarendon College the lead over Frome Technical when he scored in the 34th minute and they had to wait until the 57th minute when Christopher Hull got the second before Devonti Hodges scored from a free kick in time added.
It was the first loss of the season for Frome Technical, but they had booked their spot after winning their first two games, against York Castle High and Rusea’s High.
