Week-long clean-up planned for Hanover
HOPEWELL, Hanover — An attempt will be made to rid Hanover of garbage during a one-week clean-up drive planned for November 21 to 28.
The announcement was made by Member of Parliament for Hanover Western Tamika Davis during a meeting of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Area Council Four last Sunday at the Bethel Primary School in Hopewell.
“The Hanover Western constituency, we will be embarking upon a drive to remove garbage from our parish,” said Davis. There is also a plan to dedicate a day to the collection of bulky waste.
The first-term MP did not give details but said this is not the first time such an initiative has been planned. She stressed that residents have a role to play in keeping their surroundings clean, and in separating their garbage.
“So, what do we have to do as a people? We have to recognise that we have a role to play in keeping Jamaica clean. It is not just enough to complain. Consider what you do and how you contribute to the pileup. You have to dispose of the garbage properly,” said Davis.
She asked for the patience of constituents who are dissatisfied with the inadequacy of garbage collection, telling them that the National Solid Waste Management Authority is slated to get 50 new trucks by the end of the month.
Her colleague MP for Hanover Eastern Dave Brown – who said the pile-up of garbage is the “biggest problem” the constituency faces now – appealed for one of the 50 trucks to be allocated to Hanover Eastern.
“I don’t know if it is a bit premature but I want to say to Minister [of Local Government and Rural Development, Desmond McKenzie], ‘Just one truck. Give us one truck out of the 50 because we want the garbage to be collected’,” Brown appealed.
