WE’LL FIX IT!

WE’LL FIX IT!

Senior Reggae Girlz Head Coach Lorne Donaldson is eyeing significant improvements from his team to close out their two-match friendly international series against Paraguay with a complete performance.

Though the Girlz through Allyson Swaby’s 90th-minute strike came away 1-0 victors in the opening contest at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall on Thursday, Donaldson believes they were lacking in certain aspects of the game and is hoping they will use today’s final encounter to right the wrongs.

Kick-off is at 6:00 pm at the National Stadium.

“I wouldn’t say it was a dominant performance, we did play some good football in patches and obviously we missed some chances that we should have put away. But that’s football and we have to give Paraguay credit for the way the came back in the second half and did some good stuff.

“So yes, we won because that’s the kind of team we are, we always find a way to get stuff done, but we have to improve,” Donaldson told the Jamaica Observer.

While the Girlz were more lively in the attacking third, for Donaldson, the defensive end, which has been a major sore point of the Reggae Girlz team over the years, was found a bit wanting.

However, with the games being used to assess players and also amplify preparations for next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Donaldson pointed out that they will use today’s game to address those concerns.

“We were average and we can be much better. Actually, everybody knows that we as a group have to be much better going forward. The players know it and we [the coaching staff] know it, so there is no denying that.

“We know if we are strong defensively we will find a way to get a goal, they kept a clean sheet because Sydney made a couple of good saves. So that part, especially our passing when we are playing out from the back, needs some work,” Donaldson declared.

“Some of the players came in and their work ethic was good and that’s what we are looking for. But again, our focus is on ensuring that we give off a complete performance at all times because sometimes it’s not the team that plays the best wins,” the tactician added.

On that note, Donaldson reaffirmed his intentions to rotate some players to ensure that others are given a fair shot to be a part of their end product for a second-consecutive appearance at the global showpiece.

Still, he remains mindful that Marcello Frigerio’s side should show more attacking intent at the start as they also up their tempo for next year’s intercontinental play-offs where their quest for the maiden World Cup debut continues.

Midfielder Fanny Godoy and Jessica Martinez, who both play professionally in Spain, are now expected to take their places in Paraguay’s starting line-up after coming on Thursday.

“I’m sure they will start better because they have some good players who play in Spain so obviously they are going to be rested and ready to go,” Donaldson assessed.

“Their number 10 [Martinez] is a very good player so we know that we have to make some adjustments and make sure that we are aggressive in terms of our holistic approach and hopefully it will be one of those games where we see a lot of end to end action,” he said.

Despite changes being the order of the day, Donaldson and his assistants Xavier Gilbert and Ak Lakhani could go with the same backline of Rebecca Spencer between the sticks, shadowed by Allyson Swaby and Satara Murray, flanked by Deneisha Blackwood on the left and Tiernny Wiltshire on the right.

Havana Solaun could now join Drew Spence and Atlanta Primus in midfield with Khadija Shaw, Chenya Matthews and late arrival Jody Brown could lead the attacking front.
