A man and a woman accused of stealing Flow copper cable wires were offered bail in the sum of $500,000 and $300,000, respectively, when they appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Taxi operator Shane Henry and wholesale clerk Tovania Nehmbhard were charged with conspiracy to commit simple larceny, malicious destruction of property, conspiracy to commit malicious destruction of property, and attempt to commit larceny.
The court was told that on August 21, a police team was on patrol in Pembroke Hall, St Andrew, when they noticed the accused acting suspiciously in a white AD Wagon. According to investigators, upon closer scrutiny it was discovered that Henry and Nehmbhard were trying to remove copper cable wires from the area, which was later found to belong to the telecommunications company.
The court was also told that after being cautioned by the police, Nehmbhard said “Mi have four pickney, mi nah go jail wid you.”
Nehmbhard, however, denied that she made the statement.
At an October 3 bail hearing, a ruling in the matter had been withheld to await a report detailing any previous convictions, however, the report was not forthcoming up to when the case was mentioned on Tuesday.
“Evidence for the prosecutions is sufficiently serious. I don’t hold the case against both the defendants in equal terms… but the court is of the view that there are sufficient conditions that can be put in place to manage these concerns,” the Senior Parish Judge, Lori-Ann Cole-Montague said.
Henry was then offered bail in the sum of $500,000 with one to two sureties. A daily curfew between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am was also imposed, and he was ordered to surrender all travel documents and report to the nearest police station daily between the hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
As for Nehmbhard, bail was offered to her in the sum of $300,000 with one to two sureties. She was also ordered to report to the nearest police station on Tuesdays and Thursday between the hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
