Child with malaria recovers
A child who recently tested positive for malaria, after returning from overseas, has been treated and has recovered, the Ministry of Health and Wellness said Friday. The individual resides in St Catherine.
Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton told the Jamaica Observer that protocols such as fogging are being done in the St Catherine community.
According to the World Health Organization, malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
The first symptoms are fever, headache and chills and, if left untreated, can lead to death.
In 2020 there were an estimated 241 million cases of malaria worldwide, with an estimated 627,000 deaths.
