STETHS cruise into semis of ISSA Under-14, Under-16 tourneys
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) confirmed their place in both semi-finals of the ISSA Rural Area Under-14 and Under-16 competitions after the quarter-finals ended on Thursday.
The semi-finals will be played on Monday at STETHS and Brooks Park.
STETHS, who had already qualified for the Under-14 semi-finals, won Group B after playing out a 0-0 draw with Vere Technical, who also advanced.
Joining them will be St James schools Cornwall College, who topped Group A with seven points after beating St Mary High 2-0, and Anchovy High who beat McGrath High 5-2.
In the Under-16, STETHS qualified as runners-up in Group 2 despite losing 2-0 to Glenmuir High who topped the group with maximum nine points.
Defending champions Garvey Maceo, who were already sure of their semi-final spot, topped Group 1 with seven points after they were held 1-1 by Black River who advanced as runners-up with four points.
At Cornwall College Antwone Marshall scored a hat-trick to lead Anchovy High to a big 5-2 win over McGrath High, netting in the second, 44th and 61st minutes.
McGrath had come from behind to lead 2-1 but Anchovy High, who had lost 1-0 to Cornwall College at the same venue three days earlier, responded with four goals.
Karim Reynolds had levelled the scores for McGrath when he scored in the sixth minute and Joshua Wilson gave the St Catherine school the lead three minutes into the second half, in the 38th minute.
Marshall took Anchovy back level in the 44th minute before goalkeeper Norel Reid’s long clearance from the edge of his box was badly judged by his counterpart Ric-queue Brooks, who came off his line to the edge of his box and could only watch the ball bounce over his head and into the goal.
Marshall then completed his hat-trick with a direct free kick from just inside his own half that beat Brooks high into the top right-hand corner of the goal.
Aiden James, who played in the daCosta Cup for Anchovy, got the fifth goal from the penalty spot.
At St Mary High Mekhi Foster scored early in the game and Carlondo Morris in the second half for Cornwall College in their 2-0 win.
