‘Boom Boom’ to blaze at ‘Burna’ show
Promoter/sound system selector Marlon “Boom Boom” Wizard says Burna Boy’s concert on Sunday is a big boost to Jamaica. This came after it was announced on Tuesday that he is one of the disc jockeys in the line-up for the show.
“Ah big move this, enuh. This is a big move fi di culture and the country. People from all over the world a fly come in,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Alongside Boom Boom, Chromatic, Renaissance, Bloodline Franco and DJ Mac will also be on the turntables at the event set for the National Stadium in St Andrew.
The disc jockey says this will be his first gig with the Nigerian superstar.
“Mi feel good within miself fi know seh mi aguh deh pon di show. It’s my first time working on the same show as Burna Boy,” he said.
Popcaan as well as Lila Iké will also be performing.
According to Boom Boom, conceptualiser of Boom Sundays weekly street party in Grants Pen, he has always had an appreciation for Afrobeats and has helped to sensitise Jamaicans on the genre.
“A mi bring Afrobeats come a Jamaica, suh till mi all have Afrobeats dub plates. When mi a tour England, Afrobeats mash up the place. A DJ Andrew Fresh mi hear ah play Afrobeats inna England then me download the song dem and start play dem inna the streets. When we have the season party and the boat ride dem, mi play dem till it start spread,” he explained.
Burna Boy rose to stardom in 2012 with Like to Party, the lead single from his debut studio album, L.I.F.E.
In 2019 he won Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards and was announced as an Apple Music Up Next artiste. His fourth studio album, African Giant, was released in July 2019 and won Album of the Year at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards; it was also nominated for a Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Love Damini — his latest album — and Last Last are nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance categories, respectively.
