WOWZA WINS AGAIN
Three-year-old American-bred dark bay colt Wowza won his second consecutive race on local soil in the “Making Winners Everyday” Trophy, a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claimer ($400,000-$300,000) travelling 7 furlongs (1,400m).
Wowza from the time the gates opened started to set the pace, holding a slim lead over A Seh Soup (Dane Dawkins) down the backstretch. Nez Perce (Tevin Foster) raced in third place, with Funky Fashion (Daniel Thompson) occupying the fourth spot. Wowza continued to lead going into the half-mile (800m) turn, but A Seh Soup pointed at the seven-sixteenth pole and held the advantage entering the straight.
With Wowza refusing to give up on the inside rails, a battle for supremacy then developed in the deep stretch, but jockey Robert Halledeen held his mount well-balanced, and the Winchester McIntosh trainee found extra and edged away to win by a short head. Bin Laden, under Anthony Thomas, came through to finish third. The final time for the race was 1:30.3.
HAT-TRICK OF WINS FOR DILIGENT
Diligent romped to his third win on the trot in the SVL “Lucky 5” Dash Trophy for three-year-olds and upwards Optional Claimers ($250,000-$200,000) going over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).
Trained by Ian Alexander and ridden by Devon A Thomas, Diligent wasn’t the best to leave the start gates as he broke in last place and watched as Breaking Storm (Tevin Foster) set the fractions JamalJames (Roger Hewitt). Approaching the home stretch, Diligent started to recover moving into fifth place behind JamalJames, Breaking Storm, Shashamani Dance (Christopher Mamdeen), and Thegoodlife (Shane Richardson).
Diligent surrounded rivals entering the drive and sprinted clear to win easily by 6 lengths in 1:09.4. JamalJames held on for second place as Thegoodlife finished third.
SENSATIONAL SATIN GOES ONE BETTER
Sensational Satin, after finishing second to Duke of Springs over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m) on December 18, returned and made no mistake in winning the SVL “IBet Supreme” Trophy, a native-bred five-year-old and upwards (non-winners of three) call at 5 furlongs (1,000m) round.
Jockey Dane Dawkins broke the Vincent Atkinson-conditioned Sensational Satin in third place at the off, chasing Wifey Sez So (Aaron Chatrie) and Awesome Boy (Roger Hewitt) into the turn. Sensational Satin continued to go after the two leaders at the top of the stretch before going by without any fuss.
With a couple of cracks from the whip, Sensational Satin responded and, although drifting wide in the lane, won easily at the wire by 2 ¾ lengths ahead of a determined Wifey Sez So on the inside rails. Three Card Guy (Samantha Fletcher) finished in third place. The race was clocked in a final time of 1:03.3.
EASY DOES IT FOR ZD EYE
Trained by Michael Marlowe and ridden by Reyan Lewis, ZD Eye easily brushed aside rivals in the SVL Superlotto “Become A Super Millionaire” Trophy, a Restricted Allowance V contest for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of two), over one mile (1,600m).
ZD Eye broke off well in third place behind Fearless Vibe (Paul Francis) and Dancinginthereeze (Omar Simpson) down the backstretch. ZD Eye maintained his gallop well until navigating the half-mile turn, when she slipped down into second place, going in pursuit of Fearless Vibe.
Approaching the distance, ZD Eye pulled alongside Fearless Vibe for a brief moment before sprinting clear in deep stretch to win going away by 15 lengths ahead of Fearless Vibe and Another Champion (Anthony Thomas). The final time for the race was 1:44.1.
