Versatile Serena Cole feels ‘great’ after capturing long jump/100m double
EDWIN Allen’s Serena Cole stole the show at Saturday’s 29th staging of the Pure Wata/JC R Danny Williams track and field development meet after she won the Class One long jump and 100 metres in impressive fashion at the Richard Ashenheim Stadium in St Andrew.
Cole, who is the World Under-20 100m silver medallist, cut the sand with a leap of 5.58 metres to win the long jump competition.
Jada Kamtha of Wolmer’s was second with a jump of 5.55m, while third went to Onanda Lowe from Immaculate in 5.42m
The 18-year-old Cole then returned half an hour later to win heat three of the girls class one 100m event in a swift 11.58 seconds to emerge as the overall champion of the timed final competition.
Mickayla Gardener from Wolmer’s was second overall after winning heat two in 11.91, while third went to Immculate’s Burbridge Essence with 12.21.
Cole told the Jamaica Observer that she was happy with her performances, but in the same breath admitted that she still has a lot of work to do to improve her distance and time in both events.
“It is a great feeling to come out here and win both events knowing that this is my first competition of the season,” said Cole.
“However, I wanted to run a better time in the 100 metres because I know that I can run much faster than that.
“l am quite satisfied with my long jump performance because me and my coach have been working on some things in training this season, and hopefully everything will work out for us as the season goes on,” she added.
Lacovia’s Sabrina Dockery emerged the overall champion of the girls’ class two 100m after clocking 11.92, Williams Knibb’s Lavanya Williams was second with a time of 12.09 ahead of Shevi Anne Shim of with Immaculate 12.43.
Kishay Rowe of Alphansus Davis won the girls’ class one 800m in 2:13.33 seconds, ahead of Oneika Brissett of William Knibb with 2:16.14 and Jamara Patterson of St Catherine with 2:17.22.
