Man ordered to pay $160,000 after attempting to run over ex-girlfriend with car
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A man was ordered to pay a total of $160,000 in restitution, on Tuesday, after attempting to run over his now ex-girlfriend with his car.
Darren Braun appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court before Senior Parish Judge, Lori-Ann Cole-Montaque, to answer to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of assault at common law.
He pleaded guilty to the first count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the woman revealed that she would not continue with the other charges if he paid her restitution, since she will be starting school after the Easter holiday.
Braun agreed to the terms and will pay $70,000 and $60,000 for the first and second count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and $30,000 for the charge of assault at common law.
The court was told that after their relationship soured, on October 31, Braun allegedly pointed a knife at the woman, grabbed her arm, which caused an injury on her arm. It was also revealed that he chased her with the knife.
Following that incident, on November 2, Braun allegedly tried to use his vehicle to run her over during an altercation.
“It is not my desire to have any young man locked up. This is a woman who you were telling sweet words of nothing,” Cole-Montaque said, before ordering him to return to court on February 7 for sentencing on the matter he pleaded guilty to.
He was further remanded.
“The only thing that will make you come out of custody is a sizable amount. At least $70,000 on the sentence matter,” the judge said.
A fingerprint order was also made for him.
