Do you understand your job, Mr Morgan?
Dear Editor,
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) made the right choice in January of last year by naming a minister with responsibility for information. One year later I am beginning to question if Robert Nesta Morgan is the right person for the job and whether he understands his role.
As minister without portfolio with responsibility for information Morgan is still behaving like he’s the director of communication or the press secretary for Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Naomi Francis is the current press secretary and her job is to represent the Office of the Prime Minister.
Even though the information portfolio is a part of the Office of the Prime Minister, that doesn’t mean the other ministries should be forsaken.
When the information portfolio was attached to the Ministry of Education and Youth, the ministers and state ministers of that ministry used the information ministry to focus on the issues related to education and youth only. Now that it has been moved a similar problem is occurring.
Morgan, your role is to represent the Government of Jamaica, not just the prime minister.
