Trainer Nunes stars again at Caymanas Park
AFTER saddling three winners the previous race day, three-time former champion trainer Anthony Nunes followed up with two on Sunday.
The highlight came from Nuclear Noon who won the $1.14-million Millard Ziadie Memorial Cup, the prime event of the nine-race card at Caymanas Park.
Bred by Nuclear Wayne out of the Yankee Gentleman mare Noon It Is, Nuclear Noon came from behind runners to easily brush aside rivals by 3¼ lengths in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five and a half furlongs (1,100m).
Under the capable hands of Tevin Foster, Nuclear Noon sat just off the pace at the start of the race and watched as Madelyn’s Sunshine led the small field of seven runners into the half-mile (800m) turn, showing the way ahead of Alexa’s Dream (Dane Dawkins) and stablemate Eagle One (Roger Hewitt).
Nuclear Noon continued to bide his time well approaching the distance, as he sneaked down on rivals entering the straight. Stepping off the rails and turning for home, Nuclear Noon produced a late surge to get to the wire in front of Eagle One and Madelyn’s Sunshine in a time of 1:07.0 (23.0 x 46.3) for the distance.
Nunes’ other winner was Ha Gow Siu Mei (Linton Steadman) in the fifth race over the straight course. His winners on Saturday were GT Boy, Milos, and Nefertari.
Also with two winners on the card is former three-time champion jockey Anthony Thomas. Thomas was successful with Hunter’s Ridge in the opening event for trainer Steven Todd, and Rose Apple in the night pan for trainer Keffin Murray.
Racing continues next weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
