Asafa special guest at UN’s ‘Making a Difference Beyond the Game’ event
Olympian and former 100m world record holder Jamaican Asafa Powell is a specially invited guest at the United Nations’ “Making a Difference Beyond the Game” event this Thursday.
As the world celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), the United Nations will be zooming in on the positive role sport and physical activity play in the lives of individuals and communities across the globe.
The event will be held at the Turkish House, 821 First Ave, New York, from 3-5 pm.
Powell is considered one of the greatest sprinters of all time, having won numerous medals and accolades throughout his illustrious career, including at the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships. He held the world record in the 100m from 2005 to 2008 and has a personal best of 9.72 seconds, and is still the fourth-fastest man in history over that distance. He has also been a strong advocate for the positive impact of sports and physical activity on individuals and communities.
“Making a Difference Beyond the Game” will showcase the important role of sports in promoting social inclusion, gender equality, and youth empowerment. It will feature a panel discussion, presentations by a myriad of experts and athletes and interactive activities to engage attendees and highlight the importance of sports in creating a better world.
IDSDP is an annual celebration of the power of sport to drive social change, community development, and promote peace around the world. The UN designated April 6 as IDSDP in 2013, recognising the role that sports and physical activity play in promoting sustainable development and peace.
