A British woman and her Jamaican spouse were each offered $2 million bail on Friday after the woman allegedly tried to smuggle two and a half pounds of cocaine in a patty travel box on a flight bound for the United Kingdom.

Kay-Ann Anderson, a 46-year-old manager of London, England, and Lekan Olamida, a 48-year-old farmer of Bellefield district in Manchester, pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession, dealing, attempting to export, and conspiracy to export cocaine, in the St James Parish Court on Friday.

During the bail hearing before presiding Parish Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley defence counsel Tom Tavares-Finson emphasised Olamida’s cooperation with the law enforcement authorities.

“In relation to Mr Olamida, he is a farmer and has no previous convictions and he will appear for his trial,” Tavares-Finson said.

Meanwhile, the court was informed that the police had already taken possession of Anderson’s travel documents in order to address the prosecution’s concern about her possible departure from the country. Additionally, it was revealed that the forensic certificate, scene-of-crime statement, and other pertinent documents were missing from the case file.

Smith-Ashley then granted Anderson and Olamida bail in the sum of $2 million each, which included a requirement of paying $1 million in cash bonds. Additionally, they were instructed to provide their fingerprints to the police.

Anderson was given a directive to report to the police four times weekly while Olamida was instructed to do so three times per week. The two accused were also ordered to surrender their travel documents and stop orders were issued at all ports.

The case will be mentioned on July 14.

Allegations are that on May 10 Anderson checked in at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to board a flight to Birmingham, England.

She was stopped and searched while passing through the airport’s security checkpoint and a box with patties was discovered in her carry-on luggage. When the box was opened a white substance resembling cocaine was allegedly found. Police estimated the value at $7.72 million.

During a subsequent police interview Anderson identified Olamida as the person who had given her the illegal item, leading to her arrest and indictment. Olamida was later found by the police at his Manchester residence and, under caution, said “No comment,” before being arrested and charged.
