Man pays $35,000 for destroying ex-girlfriend’s smart phone
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A 54-year-old man who claimed his ex-girlfriend was stalking him was brought before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday after he allegedly destroyed the woman’s smart phone.
The crown told Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montaque that Lennox Russell and the complainant recently separated and on May 12, Russell and the woman had an altercation after he looked into her Samsung A 20 smartphone and saw something that upset him. That the crown said, resulted in him destroying the device.
“Everyday unuh looking into [women’s] phone and cya manage,” Cole-Montaque chided.
But defending his action, the man revealed that he told his ex-girlfriend to “stop stalk mi,” but she wouldn’t.
He said the woman even went as far as conducting a “sneak operation” at his house to catch him with another female.
“She always a argue about me having [another] girl. She terrorise me… she annoying,” Russell said.
However, the complainant had a different version of events. She told the court that on the day of the incident it was Russell who showed up at her shop and punched her under her ribs. She claimed that he was the one stalking her.
“Is it over for both of you?” the judge asked, to which they said “Yes, Your Honour.”
Russell was then ordered to repay the woman for the damaged phone. This cost him $35,000, which he paid in full on Tuesday.
With restitution paid, the crown opted to offer no evidence against Russell, and he was subsequently admonished and discharged.
