Crocs, Lady Crocs start gold hunt at CAC Games
San Salvador, El Salvador — Jamaica’s men’s (Crocs) and women’s (Lady Crocs) Rugby Sevens teams will begin their campaigns at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Game here today.
The Crocs, which won a bronze medal four years ago in Colombia, will be hoping to capture the gold medal this year.
They face Mexico and Costa Rica at 10 am and 1 pm, respectively.
Head Coach Bruce Martin says they have done the hard work in their preparations and they are now aiming for a positive start in the competition.
“We are feeling confidence because we came out here with one mission and that is to win the gold medal,” Martin told the Jamaica Observer.
“The team that we have here is one of the strongest teams that we have ever put together, which is a mix of local and overseas-based players and energy is very high in the camp and we will definitely leave here with a medal.”
Martin says that all the teams in the competition have been playing well, so they are not going to take any of their opponents lightly.
“These are going to be tough games because we are not going to take any of the teams lightly in this tournament, so we want to make sure that we come away with two wins on Sunday.
“I am also feeling very good because all the boys are injury-free and they have prepared the right way, so we are just ready and raring to go.”
The Lady Crocs are scheduled to play three matches this afternoon. They will first take on Venezuela, then Colombia, before closing out the day against Mexico.
Their head coach, Hughton Campbell, says they are motivated and ready to deliver a very solid performance.
“I am feeling really good and very positive because, as you can see, these ladies are ready for action,” he said.
“This is by far the best team that I have had to work with in the eight years I have coached Jamaica.”
Campbell says that all the teams in the competition have played well in their build-up to the championships and he is expecting a tough challenge from them all.
“The matches are going to be tough because we saw some other teams playing recently in their regional Olympic qualifiers and they were at the peak of their games, so we know that they are good but we are going to have to be even better.”
