DaCosta, Lewis steal spotlight at Caymanas
Champion trainer Jason DaCosta and title-chasing jockey Reyan Lewis had huge smiles on their faces at the races as they dominated proceedings to share the spotlight on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
DaCosta, who started the day with 199 winners, saddled three winners to surpass the milestone of 200 career wins, while Lewis, who was atop all three of DaCosta’s winners, won another race to finish the day with four winners.
DaCosta reached the milestone in the fifth race, when his charge Tekapunt was expertly handled by Lewis and won the six-and-a-half furlong (1,200m) event by five-and-a-half lengths. The following race, the pair proceeded with three-year-old bay filly MPRS Links, who won by a head in a maiden condition race over seven furlongs (1,400m).
DaCosta and Lewis capped off the triple with She’s My Destiny, who romped home in the $1.5-million Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) 22nd Anniversary Trophy feature event over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m).
The five-year-old chestnut mare She’s My Destiny won the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward by three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of stablemates King Arthur (Javaniel Patterson) and Miniature Man (Abigail Able). The final time for the race was 1:06.2 (23.2 x 46.2).
Lewis then booted home the Gregg Fennell-conditioned Ras Emanuel in the day’s eighth event for his four-timer. Fennell had previously worked as DaCosta’s assistant trainer.
With those winners, Lewis took his season’s tally to 54 winners, some 16 wins ahead of Tevin Foster (38 winners) in the race for the 2023 jockey’s championship.
Racing continues today with another 10-race card. First post is at 11:45 am.
