ST JAMES, Jamaica— The case against a St James woman, who was accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the back during a heated argument, was dropped following a mediation session.

Calleina Callender appeared in the Parish Court on Wednesday, charged with unlawful wounding.

The court heard that on April 21 around 8:00 pm in Barrett Town, an argument between the complainant and the accused escalated into a physical altercation.

The complainant walked away, disregarding some knives that Callender had brought with her. The defendant then stabbed the complainant in the back, causing a wound.

“Are you guilty?” presiding judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley asked the accused after the allegations were outlined.

“Miss, he slapped me in the face and then took up a machete to chop me,” Callender explained to the judge.

The accused woman also told the judge that the stab her boyfriend received was a “tiny” one.

The judge temporarily suspended the proceedings to allow the pair to participate in a mediation session with a probation officer who was present in court.

When the case was brought up again, the duo informed the court that they had reached an agreement, and the prosecution offered no evidence against Callender.

“How old are you?” Smith-Ashley then asked the accused.

“I am 18 years old, Your Honour,” Callender replied.

“What are you doing in a prisoner’s dock stabbing up people?” the judge asked the defendant before issuing her a stern warning and allowing her to leave the courtroom.
