One man dead after sustaining injuries following shootout and car chase in Portmore
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – An unidentified man was shot and killed by the police in Portmore, St Catherine on Sunday, during a reported car chase and shootout that ended in an early morning crash.
According to information reaching Observer Online, sometime after 3:00 am, a group of police officers were on patrol in the Naggo’s Head area of Portmore when they signalled the driver of a Toyota Voxy to stop. The driver reportedly disobeyed their command and opened gunfire on the team before speeding away.
The police gave chase and returned fire. The driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a canal along the Hellshire main road.
The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was found suffering from injuries and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The police said that during a search of the vehicle a firearm was found.
The Portmore police along with the Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) are investigating.
