Perfect Brew romps away with BGLC Trophy
PERFECT Brew came up in the last stages of the race to overcome opponents in the 19th running of the $1.7-million Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Tuesday, thanks to a well-timed ride from champion jockey Dane Dawkins.
Bred by Bern Identity out of the Milwaukee Brew mare Moonlight Brew, Perfect Brew came from second to last position in the six-horse field to win by a length and a quarter in the Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five and a half furlongs (1,100m).
Perfect Brew broke off well behind runners at the start of the race and watched as God of Love (Anthony Allen) led the field ahead of Lure of Lucy (Phillip Parchment) and Yellowstone (Tevin Foster). Perfect Brew continued to labour behind while God of Love and Yellowstone moved off in their own struggle nearing the half-mile (800m) turn.
Yellowstone‘s challenge was disregarded when God of Love entered the drive and looked all over the winner inside the final furlong (200m) of the race. When Perfect Brew appeared to be doomed Dawkins sent out the Richard Azan trainee, and the four-year-old bay gelding exploaded brilliantly on the outside and caught competitors close to home for his second win from seven starts this season. God of Love finished in second place with Yellowstone getting third place.
After splits of 23.0 x 46.2 the final time for the race was clocked at 1:08.0.
The win was Dawkins’ third for the afternoon as the soft-spoken rider had earlier won aboard Rejected Raja in the third race for trainer Robert Pearson, and Blue Persuasion for trainer Michael Marlowe in the fifth race.
Racing continues on Saturday with the running of the Jamaica Oaks Classic race.
