Jamaica end Under-20 Pan Am champs with 13 medals
JAMAICA added three more medals — two silver in the 4x400m relays and a bronze in the men’s high jump from Brandon Pottinger — as the 21st staging of the Pan American Under-20 track and field championships concluded at Estadio José Antonio Figueroa in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Jamaica ended the three-day championships with 13 medals, one gold coming from Alana Reid in the women’s 100m, eight silver, and four bronze.
On Sunday morning’s session World Under-20 and Carifta Games champion Pottinger cleared a season-best 2.11m as he finished behind two Americans — Grant Campbell who took the gold with 2.19m and Brion Stephens who was second with 2.17m.
Both mile relay teams finished behind the USA team and ahead of the Brazil team, the men clocking 3:09.17 minutes with the team of Enrique Webster, Delano Kennedy, Tarique Dacres and Jaheen Bell.
The Americans won with 3:05.98 and Brazil took the bronze medal with 3:09.57.
The women’s team of Shanique Williams, Sabrina Dockery, Tonyan Beckford and Dejanae Oakley ran 3:38.56 minutes, with the USA winning with 3:30.25 and Brazil third on 3:38.87.
Royan Walters, who medalled in the long jump on Saturday, just missed another in the triple jump on Sunday as he was fourth with a best mark of 15.11m (1.4m/s) after fouling his first two attempts.
American Sterling Scott won with 15.67m (1.5m/s) (which came in the first round), and after he jumped 15.58m in the second round and fouled the third jump, passed on his other jumps. Chile’s Diego Bustamante Bastias snatched silver with a personal best 15.28m (0.8m/s) in the final round, taking him from sixth place to second, while Divine Aniamaka of Canada took the bronze with a wind-assisted 15.25m (2.3m/s).
Kitania Headley finished fifth in the women’s 800m after she ran 2:11.99 seconds, while Lavanya Williams placed seventh in the women’s 200m in 24.74 seconds (1.6m/s).
