Williamson staying the course
Kimberly Williamson believes that making it to back-to-back World Championships and winning a bronze medal in the women’s high jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games are the result of a “mindset change” as she remains on course to achieve even bigger goals.
Williamson won the national title last year when she beat national record holder Lamara Distin. The two swapped places this year, and Williamson said her success over the last two years is a “stepping stone” to bigger things.
“I think its just a mindset change,” she told the Jamaica Observer in Budapest on Wednesday as she prepared for the World Athletics Championships that gets underway on Saturday.
“My goal was always to go to the Olympic Games and that is still the ultimate goal and focus, so everything in-between is just a stepping stone towards accomplishing that,” she said.
Williamson, who has a season’s best 1.85m jump so far, said making it back to the final at the World Championships was her main goal this season, as well as to get a new personal best 1.97m.
“It is realistic physically,” she said, regarding achieving the personal best.
“I feel good. The last couple of days of training since the training camp has been really good and really positive. So I’m just going out there to execute as best as possible. My coach is not here so that will be new territory. But, you know, [I am] just being positive. I have Lamara and we’ve been supporting each other throughout.”
Getting to a historic final along with Distin last year, she said, provided vital motivation.
“Last year just really showed me what I was capable of, just making it to the final, me and Lamara being the first Jamaicans to do that just showed us what we are capable of doing.”
