Runaway Algo, I Am Fred rekindle rivalry ‘Maneater’ trophy feature
FOREIGNERS Runaway Algo and I Am Fred rekindle their battle in a seemingly two-horse field for what should be an exciting contest in today’s $1.75-million She’s A Maneater Trophy feature event at Caymanas Park.
Both runners last raced on July 29 in the Eros Trophy over seven furlongs (1,400m), with Runaway Algo winning by 5 3/4 lengths over I Am Fred.
Today’s fight, however, is an entirely different story since the distance has been increased by a furlong (200m), making the She’s A Maneater a one-mile (1,600m) event with the weight shifted in favour of I Am Fred. Runaway Algo moves up from 53.okgs (117 lb) to 57.0kgs (126 lb) while I Am Fred has come down from 55.5kgs (123lb) to 55.0kgs (121lb).
The Eros was expected to be an interesting contest which also involved the well-decorated, locally bred Mahogany, but Runaway Algo left his opponents in the dust as he stormed to the front at the start and never looked back, winning without breaking a sweat in a time of 1:26.3 (23.4 x 46.0 x 1:11.3).
Runaway Algo slowed the pace slightly towards the five-furlong (1,000m), allowing I Am Fred and Mahogany to fight for the lead. However, as the half-mile (800m) turn approached, Roman let Runaway Algo go a bit and the Dale Murphy trainee raised the tempo and drew away, finding himself alone at the wire.
That indicated Runaway Algo should have no trouble going the extra furlong here as he has three victories from six starts at this distance. If Runaway Algo is left alone on the front end once more, expect another easy romp.
I Am Fred’s four-race winning streak ended during the Eros Trophy. Trained by Jason DaCosta, I Am Fred was left flat-footed at the half mile (800m), and by the time he got going again the race was already done. He will appreciate the extra distance and may be able to turn the tables on Runaway Algo and beat the rest of the competition.
The She’s A Maneater, a Graded Stakes/Open Allowance race for three-year-olds and up which honours one of the best ever to grace the Caymanas Park surface, is positioned as the seventh event on the 10-race card with a post time of 3:30 pm. First race is at 11:45 am.
DaCosta’s Outbidder and Miniature Man will more than likely complete the frame in the six-horse field. Sweet Majesty and D Head Cornerstone are only in here to test the depth of the waters.
Slowly but surely Outbidder is showing her true potential. Outbidder won the Lieu Chie Poo Trophy on last over this distance on August 12 in a time of 1:41.1. She is going to have to improve on that performance if she is to be competitive but she has talent — and that is without a doubt. She should not be disgraced at the top level.
Miniature Man has been running some good races in recent times. He has been beaten twice in a row by Horse of the Year Atomica. With the top two hard to get by, Miniature Man looks the best bet for third place.
