Half-miler Adelle Tracey gets high on magic of Budapest
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Adelle Tracey was surprised to have qualified for her first global final after she ran a personal best :.58.99 minutes in the semi-finals of the women’s 800m on Friday night at the World Athletics Championships at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.
Tracey, who had broken the national record in the 1,500m earlier in the week, was fourth in her semi-final heat, broke her previous best of 1:59.20 seconds set last year.
National record holder Natoya Goule failed to get past the semi-finals; however, as she ran 2:00.78 minutes in her race, leading for most of the way before she was overhauled less than 50 metres to the finish line and finished second.
“I think I am in a bit of state of shock, I honestly just wanted to go out there and just have fun, run my best race,” she said afterwards. “And now I have come away with a personal best and everything I’ve ever wanted to be in a global final.”
The secret to her success this championships, she said, was “Honestly, just having fun.”
“I think that’s the secret ingredient. Yeah, having fun is definitely underrated,” adding her experience running in the stadium for the first was “amazing”.
“I think I was just so keen to like take it all in. I felt like in the 1,500 I’ve been like racing in the daytime and it was incredible to see the whole stadium lit up and I was just trying to like taking in all that atmosphere and just enjoy it.”
Again she told journalists that she was “running intuitively and being in the moment”.
The women’s 800m finals will be run today.
