Second-best Money Miser looks to be first-best
Money Miser, after playing second fiddle to his peers in the recently concluded Triple Crown Series, looks all set to have his day in the sunlight when he headlines a field of nine for the third staging of the $3.75-million Winston “Fanna” Griffiths Classic feature at Caymanas Park today.
Bred by Soul Warrior–She’s Traditional, Money Miser has raced five times in his career, winning once and finishing in second place in the other four runs. The Fiztroy Glispie-bred, owned and trained Money Miser had finished second behind Mojito in the 2000 Guineas on June 4, second behind Thalita in the St Leger on July 1, and second behind Ability in the Jamaica Derby on August 7. Those efforts made him the most consistent horse to run all the Classic races.
With none of those winners here, it should be an evening stroll for Money Miser in this nine-and-a-half furlong (1,900m) contest, a Graded Stakes race for native-bred three-year-old. Shamaree Muir has been called upon to do the riding honours aboard Money Miser.
If Money Miser fails here, expect for his stablemate Princess Sharon, the Richard Azan’s Burlap, and the Power From Above, all trained by Anthony Nunes, to win.
The race honouring the Caribbean’s winningest jockey, Winston “Fanna” Griffiths, who is now a licensed trainer, is scheduled for 4:45 pm as the ninth of 10 races on the day. The first race begins at 11:45 a.m.
Three-year-old bay filly Princess Sharon was favoured to win the Jamaica Oaks on August 5 but the Soul Warrior–Princess Shine offspring finished in third place by 19 lengths behind Mamma Mia and Power From Above. With Power From Above present here, the chances of Princess Sharon winning are remote but she is talented enough to figure here if focused.
Burlap comes into this race seeking three-consecutive wins. Burlap is an improving sort who should be comfortable at this distance and, as such, is expected to run well.
Power From Above ran an encouraging race to finish second behind Mamma Mia in the Jamaica Oaks Classic over 10 furlongs (2,000m) on August 5. Power From Above came from behind horses to get beaten by 10 lengths in that all-fillies contest.
However, she was a winner over this distance on July 8, by four lengths in a time of 1:59.2. If she can reproduce that effort, then Power From Above can definitely have a say on the outcome of this race and challenge for top honours.
Essential Quality, Life is Life, California Gold, Richie Rich, and Strike Smart make up the field.
