Race Day Review — Saturday, September 9, 2023
Run as race seven, the featured 1,200-metre None Such Sprint was a demonstration of yet another flawed handicapping exercise gifting the event Jason DaCosta’s flying mare She’s My Destiny (Ramon Nepare), bet at odds of 6-5.
Favourite Runaway Algo (USA) was assigned top weight at 57 kilogrammes, which is fine, but to allot 47 kilogrammes to She’s My Destiny, winner of six of her last 10 races, is inaccurate weight allotment.
The form of the runners in a race projected as a handicap was not equalised. King Arthur, beaten over two lengths, when in receipt of seven kilogrammes from She’s My Destiny, was deemed to be only one kilogramme inferior here.
This shows a basic misunderstanding of the methodology of handicapping done without any idea of how to calculate a rating system. The correct weight for eventual 10-length winner She’s My Destiny should have been 52 kilogramme to ensure a winning chance for Runaway Algo (USA).
Opening the card was a maiden condition over 1,300 metres for four-year-olds and older and Neo Star (Ricardo Duhaney) was nearly 10 lengths clear at the finish for trainer Peter-John Parsard to win his fifth race of the season.
The recently licensed conditioner had a double victory on the card with 4-5 favourite Bootylicious scoring in the nightcap to give champion Dane Dawkins the second of two wins on the card.
The second event of nine was won by even-money favourite Chitu Prince (USA), ridden to a 16-length win margin over the 1m000-metre straight course, by Javaniel Patterson for conditioner Adrian Prince.
In race three, run at 1,000 metres straight, another even-money winner emerged in the form of Lion Talk (Phillip Parchment) for trainer Ryan Williams’ fifth success from 27 attempts this season.
In race four, Tevin Foster had trainer Roy Matthew’s Hecandance (5-2) in front early and kept him there to score by three and a half lengths at the end of the 1,400-metre gallop. Held up in the lead for 1,200 metres, Hecandance, now winner of 10 races from 46 for Matthews, was to open his 2023 training account from 11 starts.
Dawkins’ first success came in race five with 3-5 favourite Slammer, declared by Richard Azan came with a late run in an interesting 1,300-metre contest. Battling front runners KP Choice and AGift From Ben left a gap so the favourite under the excellent judgement of Dawkins was able to split them to take an advantage of a half-a-length close home.
It was odds of 10/1 against Iannai Links in race six, but under a smart ground-saving ride from Raddesh Roman to take first run on sluggish 1-5 favourite Curlin’s Flight he was two lengths superior over the 1,400-metre trip. With the win by the hard-knocking Iannai Links, hard-working second-generation trainer Ryan Darby garnered his 17th win of the 2023 racing year from 173 declarations.
Owner/breeder/trainer Carl Anderson, currently in the top 10 in these three categories, saddled 2023 Jamaica Derby sixth-place finisher Super Alex to win race eight, run over 1500 metres. The lightly raced colt with only four previous starts, with the first last April, was well backed at 2-1 and was confidently handled by Bebeto Harvey. Super Alex scored by a half a length and looks a likely prospect for future success.
The Training Feat Award is presented to Ryan Darby for the performance of Iannai Links who performed the Best Winning Gallop with Raddesh Roman’s tactically executed ride earning him another of his many Jockeyship Award.
