MAN ON!

Ben Francis Cup KO holders Glenmuir High opened their quest for honours in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition with a 4-0 win over Old Harbour High at Port Esquivel Sports Club on Wednesday.

Glenmuir were among five former daCosta Cup champions who were winners, as Garvey Maceo High, Cornwall College, St James High, and Dinthill Technical also had positive results.

Meanwhile, three games are scheduled to be played Thursday afternoon.

Defending champions Clarendon College will be front and centre as they take on Kellits High in Chapleton as both schools seek back-to-back wins to start the season.

Abraham Quest (second left) of Irwin High battles Spot Valley High’s Nathan Thompson (left) as Anthony Francis (second right) and Kevron Wright look on during the daCosta Cup Zone A game at Irwin High on Wednesday. Irwin won 3-0.

Clarendon College were impressive in their opening game, scoring five times in the first half against Lennon High before taking their feet off the gas.

Kellits equalled their win total from last season when they edged Thompson Town 1-0 in their first game on Monday and are not expected to pose much of a challenge for the champions.

Edwin Allen High, who also won their opening game, will take on Thompson Town, while Lennon High and Claude McKay will both be seeking their first points of the season.

Orane Watson grabbed a double for Glenmuir High as they got off to a good start in Zone L with Nyron Allen and Deandre Johnson getting the other goals.

Irwin High’s Nicholus Samuels (second right) kicks to score past Spot Valley High’s goalkeeper Devante Whitelocke (left) as Romaine Mamby (second left), Nathan Thompson (centre) and Malike Stewart fail to block the shot duringthe daCosta Cup Zone A game at Irwin High on Wednesday.

First-half goals from Raheem Lee and Alexander Cox saw Cornwall College beat Maldon High 2-0, but Irwin High lead Zone A on goal difference after beating Spot Valley High 3-0. Leo Campbell scored twice and Nicholous Samuels got the other goal.

St James High edged Green Pond High 1-0 thanks to a 33rd-minute goal from Kenou Gram.

Dinthill Technical were 3-1 winners over McGrath High in the second game of a double-header at Dinthill after Charlemont High edged Ewarton High 2-1.

Shevon Miller scored a hat-trick to lead Happy Grove to a 5-0 win over Port Antonio High. He scored in the 34th, 46th, and 50th minutes, while Bonny Chisholm found the back of the net in the 43rd and Sean Williams converted a 45th-minute penalty.

St James High’s Kenou Gram (centre) forces his way between Green Pond High players Omario Thompson (left) and Samuel Marshall during the daCosta Cup Zone A game at Green Pond High on Wednesday. Gram scored the game’s only goal to lift St James to victory.

Knox College made a winning return to the competition, edging Alphansus Davis High 1-0, while Black River High held back-to-back semi-finalists Mannings School to a 1-1 result.

Dunstin Cohen scored a remarkable nine times and Devoy Wynter got three goals as Denbigh High scored an 18-0 win over hapless Porus High.

Daniel Daley and Adrian Miller also bagged double,s while goalkeeper Tyrese Powell scored from the penalty spot.

It is Denbigh’s biggest win in the competition ever, and is the most lopsided so far this campaign, beating the 15-0 win by Ocho Rios over debutants Discovery Bay High on Tuesday. Paul Bogle High had also blanked Robert Lightbourne High 10-0 this season.

St James High’s Sanjay Reece (left) tries to hold off Green Pond High’s Raceen Robinson during the daCosta Cup Zone A game at Green Pond on Wednesday.
