KC win over Hydel morale-boosting, says coach
Kingston College (KC) Head Coach Vassell Reynolds has described Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Hydel High in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Manning Cup as a massive victory for his team.
Deshawn Byfield netted the lone goal for KC in the 82nd minute of the top-of-the-table Zone A match which restarted from the 30-minute marker after it was blown off on Tuesday due to lightning at Stadium East field.
The victory was KC’s six-straight in the competition. The North Street-based team leads the zone with 18 points, ahead of Calabar, who are on 12 points with a game in hand.
Hydel are on nine points, followed by Charlie Smith High (six), Camperdown High (three) and Penwood High on zero. In the zone’s other game on Thursday, Calabar hammered Penwood 7-0.
Reynolds said the win brings greater confidence for his players as they look toward the quarter-finals of the competition.
“It is a big morale booster for us because you could not ask for better in terms of points accumulation,” said Reynolds.
“However, we still have some work to do, clearly, because I think that we need to play a little more consistently especially when we are in transition and when we are in possession of the ball,” he said.
“We are taking it game by game because we continue to grow. It is a developmental process and so we continue to work and try to improve as the competition goes on,” Reynolds added.
When the match resumed on Thursday both teams failed to score during the 15 minutes before the half-time break.
However, KC came out looking the better team in the second period. They were rewarded when Byfield fired home from point-blank range from a goalmouth melee when the Hydel defenders failed to clear the ball off the goal line.
Hydel pressed hard for the equaliser but they were kept off the scoresheet due to solid work from the KC’s defensive unit.
Devon Anderson, the head coach of Hydel, said he was very dissatisfied with their performance.
“I am disappointed because I think we had the better of the run of the play and as you know goals win matches, and they got one chance and they scored against us,” said Anderson.
“I think if the game had continued on Tuesday, we would have won it because we dominated those 30 minutes,” he said.
