Rusea’s among former champions to advance in daCosta Cup

GREEN ISLAND, Hanover — Former champions Frome Technical High and Rusea’s High from Zone B and Garvey Maceo High from Zone M on Thursday all confirmed places in the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition.

The trio brings to five the number of schools that have already secured their spots in the second round. The others are Morant Bay High and Happy Grove High.

Meanwhile, the play-off spots in Zone I were also confirmed following the playing games that were completed on Thursday after they were suspended a day earlier because of wet weather and lightning strikes.

Tacky High topped the zone with 17 points after beating St Mary Technical 2-1. Wycliffe Martin High finished in second place with 14 points after a 2-2 result against Annotto Bay High in a game which they led 1-0 on Wednesday.

The other two places went to Horace Clarke High and St Mary High, both of whom finished on 13 points, the same as Annotto Bay High but with better goal differences.

St Mary High edged Horace Clarke 1-0, which was good enough for both to advance.

Frome Technical assumed the lead after an 8-1 whipping of Cambridge High to move to 18 points, while Rusea’s High lost their perfect win record after being held to a 0-0 result by Green Island High. Rusea’s improved to 16 points. Neither Frome nor Rusea’s can be caught by any other team in the zone.

Dwyane Watt and Obrien Reid scored two goals each for Frome Technical, while Stevaughn Spence, Akeem Kongal, Mario Samms, and Kemar Beckford also scored.

Garvey Maceo were awarded points after Tacius Golding failed to show up for the continuation of their game that was interrupted on Tuesday when they led 7-0. Garvey Maceo moved to 16 points and can finish no lower than second in their zone.

Defending champions Clarendon College and contenders Manchester High extended their perfect win records with double-digit triumphs over Kellits High and Cross Keys High, respectively.

Clarendon College moved to six-straight wins in Zone H after a 13-1 hammering of Kellits, with Kaheim Dixon and Malachi Douglas both scoring hat-tricks and Christopher Hull and Tedan Williams both getting braces.

Javier Newman led the way for Manchester High in their 12-0 thrashing of Cross Keys with a treble. Adrian Campbell, Michael Reid, and Tyrese Douglas all scored twice.
