Three ranked teams face upsets in D’Cup second round
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Three ranked teams will have to overturn losses if they are to qualify for the quarterfinals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after they were ambushed in Saturday’s second round first leg games.
Number four ranked Mannings School, Rusea’s High ranked 10th and Edwin Allen High ranked 14th were on the losing end of their games against Port Antonio High, Christiana High and McGrath High respectively.
Both Rusea’s High and Mannings School were losing for the first time this season.
Twayne Lopez scored in the 80th minute for Port Antonio High who are ranked 29th of the 32 qualifiers as they handed fourth-ranked Mannings School their first loss of the season.
Christiana High who were among the last schools to book a second round spot and ranked 23rd, were easy 3-0 winners over the Rusea’s High in the second game of a double header at Brooks Park while McGrath High edged last season’s semi-finalists Edwin Allen High.
Meanwhile, Clarendon College and Garvey Maceo High, the last two winners of the daCosta Cup, took big leads against deCarteret College and St Mary High School respectively.
Clarendon College won 8-0 in the first game at Brooks Park while Garvey Maceo whipped St Mary High 7-0 at Annotto Bay Sports Complex.
Clarendon College all but secured their quarter final spot as they took their perfect win record on the season to nine games as Malachi Douglas scored a hat-trick, Keheim Dixon got a brace while Theon Cupee, Christopher Hull and Devonte Hodges all got on the score sheet as well.
At the Annotto Bay Sports Complex, Garvey Maceo also got a hat-trick from Cleo Clarke as well as goals from Christopher Mundle, Delano Thompson, Jelani Williams and Everald Swaby in their big victory.
Meanwhile, Manchester High edged Munro College 1-0, Dinthill Technical beat Horace Clarke High 2-0 and Happy Grove High were 2-1 winners over Ocho Rios High to extend perfect win records on the season as well.
At St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex, Cornwall College recovered from an early deficit to run out 3-1 winners over Black River High with goals from Lincoln Cox, Braxton Richards and Rackeem Grizzle.
Frome Technical got by Vere Technical 4-1 in their game played at Foga Road High while there were draws between William Knibb Memorial and Central High and Belair High and Mile Gully High.
