Three in three for Captain Calico
TRAINER Anthony “Baba” Nunes says once his charge Captain Calico stays healthy and sound, the three-year-old chestnut could develop into a campaigner of some worth.
Bred by Soul Warrior out of the War Marshall mare Rackam’s Mistress, Captain Calico outdid rivals going seven furlongs (1,400m) on Saturday (October 21) to register his third-consecutive win from as many starts. Ridden by Tevin Foster, Captain Calico won by 6¼ lengths in a time of 1:27.1 (24.1 x 47.1 x 1:12.3).
The race was a contest for imported three-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non-winners of four).
“He is a really nice colt. I was a little worried after his last work coming into this, as it didn’t go as planned, but he knew what he was doing. I really took my time with him just because of the way the programme was set up,” Nunes told Jamaica Observer‘s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“I am very impressed with the way he performed against a good field of Restricted Stakes three-year-olds, and so fingers crossed that he stays healthy and sound. He is eligible for another Restricted Stakes race and we will take our time with him as usual, and you will see him shortly again,” Nunes added.
Captain Calico led the field narrowly ahead of Atlantic Convoy (Robert Halledeen) down the backstretch. Captain Calico maintained his gallop well while Atlantic Convoy continued to press every step of the way as the two front-runners distanced themselves from the rest of the field.
Navigating the half-mile (800m) turn, Captain Calico upped the tempo on Atlantic Convoy who tried to keep pace under strong urging. Captain Calico turned for home, and with a clear advantage and Atlantic Convoy offering nothing in deep stretch, he strolled home under a hand ride. Atlantic Convoy finished second, with Norblar (Dane Dawkins) getting third place.
