Nunes happy with work done by his crew despite well beaten in title race
Despite not having the firepowers in his stables to truly fight for the trainer’s championship as in past years, former champion trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes says he is happy with the effort of his crew this season.
Nunes, champion conditioner on three occasions (2019, 2020, and 2021), has saddled 49 winners, 36 seconds, and 33 thirds from 289 starts, collecting $39,630,450 in stakes earnings. Nunes is in second place approximately $48,055,320 behind runaway winner and defending champion Jason DaCosta, who has $87,685,770.
“Everybody knows that I have tried to win the championship every year. I did say it when I beat Jason in 2021 that he is going to be here to rule the roost for a very long time and that doesn’t mean that I am not going to try and win every year. My barn is not as big as it used to be but that’s fine and the goal is always try and win the championship,” Nunes told the Jamaica Observer‘s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Gary Subratie is third in the standings with $39,259,235 in stakes earnings from 35 wins, 42 seconds, and 33 thirds in 319 starts. Patrick Lynch ranks fourth with 38 wins, 34 seconds, and 40 thirds from 360 races for a total stakes earnings of $38,106,530.
“To say that I am disappointing, what about being third or fourth in the championship now? What about the trainers behind me, and so I am good with it; I am at peace,” Nunes said.
