Dear Editor,

I heard Opposition Leader Mark Golding using his Independence Day message to repeat his call for Jamaica to sever all ties with the British monarchy and move away from the UK-based Privy Council.

I had to wonder whether this is the same Opposition leader who placed what I view as unnecessary roadblocks in the way of constitutional reform and disposing of his British King as our head of State.

Is this the same Opposition leader who had to meditate for weeks before deciding to announce that he intends to renounce his British citizenship?

Is he still a subject of King Charles III?

Is this the same person who, while aspiring to lead our beloved country Jamaica and operating as a Jamaican legislator, thought it okay to remain a subject of the King?

And despite this has the gall to be speaking about Jamaica severing ties from the UK and becoming “truly independent”.

His hypocrisy is both astounding and offensive.
