Scales tipped in favour of Parsard rebound
After a heartbreaking loss in the Jamaica Derby, where Run Julie Run was narrowly edged out by Crown Chaser, trainer Ian Parsard is poised to bounce back with a bang in today’s $1.4-million Poorlittlerichgirl Trophy feature event.
His talented charge, the well-decorated Mahogany, is expected to dominate the Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs (1,400m), bringing smiles back to Parsard’s face.
The agony of defeat still fresh in their minds, Parsard and his team were ecstatic as
Run Julie Run seemed destined for victory in the 12-furlong (2,400m) Jamaica Derby, only to be denied by a mere half-length at the wire. But Mahogany’s impending victory should erase that disappointment.
Mahogany, a seven-year-old chestnut by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite, shouldn’t be underestimated because of his age. He is the winningest runner in the five-horse with 17 wins from 34 starts with lifetime earnings of $18,719,250.
Mahogany may have finished fourth to Mamma Mia, Funcaandun, and Easy as ABC on July 7 over seven and half furlongs (1,500m), but the shorter distance of seven furlongs could play to his advantage. With the expertise of Shane Ellis, the 2024 Jamaica Derby-winning jockey, in the saddle, Mahogany is poised to turn the tables and dominate the field. His strong training and experience make him a formidable contender. Note: Blinkers on.
While Mahogany is expected to romp to victory in the Poorlittlerichgirl Trophy feature, two horses stand out as potential spoilers: Thalita and Easy as ABC. These talented contenders could push Mahogany to his limits, making for a thrilling contest.
The Poorlittlerichgirl is positioned as the seventh event on the nine-race card with a post time of 4:25 pm. First race is at 12:30 pm.
Thalita is riding a wave of momentum after her win on July 7. The Jason DaCosta trainee demonstrated her speed and agility by edging out Perfect Brew by half a length over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) at the Overnight Allowance level in a time of 1:20.0. This victory marked her first win of the season, and she’s expected to build on this success. Thalita is expected to run well.
The Donovan Hutchinson-trained Easy as ABC had his two race his winning streak snapped on July 7 when he finished third behind Mamma Mia and Funcaandun. Despite the setback, he’s well-suited for the seven-furlong distance and should again be competitive. Notably, he finished ahead of Mahogany on July 7, and with his comfort level at this distance, he’s likely to replicate that performance. Easy as ABC is a strong contender who shouldn’t be overlooked.
The remaining runners in the race are Yellowstone and Madelyn’s Sunshine.
