Grants Pen Road to be closed for two weeks for repairs— NWA
KINGSTON, Jamaica— A section of Grants Pen Road in St Andrew will be closed to vehicular traffic for over two weeks beginning on Thursday, August 15 to facilitate repairs.
The closure will be in effect until Saturday, August 31.
The National Works Agency (NWA) said in a statement on Tuesday that the restriction will be between Fagan Avenue and Shortwood Road.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at NWA, Stephen Shaw says the roadway, which features a fording, has deteriorated in recent times due to water carried on the wheels of motor vehicles.
“The road has a combination of asphaltic concrete and a rigid concrete pavement. The section with the asphaltic concrete has significantly deteriorated and is badly rutted,” Shaw said.
“The project, which will last for four months, will see the rigid concrete section being extended to reduce the impact of water from the drain on the road,” he added.
Shaw stated that the repairs, valued at $18.1 million will also include the construction of kerb and channel, sidewalks and approximately 600 square metres of hotmix patching.
Motorists are being advised that they should not attempt to use the area during the period of closure.
The NWA went on to recommend that motorists should use alternative routes to access their destination. These include Shortwood Road, Charlton Road and Charlton Avenue.
