Racing rivals clash again
Atomica, Funcaandun, and Mamma Mia set for thrilling showdown
THE stage is set for a thrilling rematch in tomorrow’s $1.75-million Distinctly Irish Trophy feature as Atomica, Funcaandun, and Mamma Mia face off once again in a battle for supremacy.
The Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest, open to three-year-olds and upward, promises to be an electrifying clash of talent and determination.
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at each contender and their chances of emerging victorious in this highly anticipated, nine-furlong and 25-yard (1,820m) race.
1. NEO STAR: (5 b h by Neolithic —Angel Dreams) — Has shown glimpses of his ability, including a win over tomorrow’s distance in a decent time of 1:55.4 on July 8. However, he faces a significant step up in class here and may struggle to reproduce that effort against stiffer competition.
2. FURTHER AND BEYOND: (6 ch h by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Rumble
) – This former Horse of the Year has been struggling somewhat this season, finishing fifth behind Funcaandun, Mamma Mia, and Atomica over one mile (1,600m) on July 27. With the top runners present here, Further and Beyond will need a remarkable turnaround to make an impact.
3. FUNCAANDUN (USA): (3 b c by Klimt — Fifityshadesoffun) — The talented foreigner has been impressive on local soil, registering his fifth win from seven starts on July 27 when beating stablemate Mamma Mia and Atomica over one mile. He carried a mere 46.0kgs (101lb) that day, but even with a weight increase to 53.5kgs (118lb),
Funcaandun’s improving form makes him a strong contender.
4. ATOMICA: (5 ch m by Nuclear Wayne — Honkeytonkville) — The reigning two-time Horse of the Year is a class act but succumbed to weight allotment last time out, finishing third behind Funcaandun and Mamma Mia. However, with a more favourable weight distribution this time around Atomica can turn the tables on her rivals.
5. MAMMA MIA: (4 ch f by Soul Warrior – Princess Geeta) – Ran a brave race to finish second behind Funcaandun last time out but may find her stablemate tough to beat again, especially with the distance increase.
6. FRED THE GREAT (USA): 4 b c by Adios Charlie — Joyance) — This talented foreigner faces a tough ask against the top three and may struggle to keep up.
