Checkmate!
Dear Editor,
The by-election in St Ann North Eastern is one of national and political importance.
Mathew Samuda is an asset to the Jamaica Labour Party, considering the recent announcements and impending Cabinet changes. He has had notable achievements as a senator and minister.
I must note the recent criticisms from Opposition members, but may I remind them that the Government led by Andrew Holness was democratically elected to make decisions on behalf of the people, which includes, to a massive extent, the selection and nomination of effective candidates and individuals critical to national development.
The uproar and complaints show a sign of weakness and that the ‘time come’ slogan is just an affirmation they repeat to convince themselves of possible victory. Now that reality hits, His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition has chosen to abandon the people. Are they out of funds? Who knows, but the Opposition seems to be in trouble.
And indeed they are in trouble, considering the recent moves by Prime Minister Holness.
Not contesting the by-election shows weakness. While contesting and losing will demotivate its base.
Whatever moves the Opposition makes, it is still checkmate.
