Glenmuir spank Winston Jones High to secure fourth-straight win
PRATVILLE, Manchester — Orane Watson scored six goals and Tajaun Cummings scored a hat-trick as Glenmuir High romped to another big win in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Tuesday, hammering Winston Jones High 15-0 at Pratville in Manchester.
This was Glenmuir High’s fourth-straight win in the competition as they raced to 12 points atop Zone I, in which Kemps Hill High took over second place, on nine points, after a 2-1 win over Foga Road.
Meanwhile, six other schools made it three wins in a row with victories yesterday — Anchovy High, Spot Valley High, Frome Technical, Mannings School, Belair High, and Munro College.
Today, three more teams — Holmwood Technical, Happy Grove High, and Port Antonio High — will be gunning for their fourth-straight win when the competition continues with 17 games.
Another five schools, led by two-time defending champions Clarendon College, William Knibb Memorial, Manchester High, Ocho Rios High, and Yallahs High will be seeking a third-straight win.
Holmwood Technical matched their win total from last year after they had beaten Alphansus Davis High and a win against Knox College today would match their total from the 2022 season when they finished second in the group on goal difference.
Happy Grove have not lost in the first round in the last two years, drawing three of their 15 games played over the period and should get by Seaforth High today.
Clarendon College is expected to get the better of Thompson Town and extend their record of never losing to them, while William Knibb should get the better of Discovery Bay High.
On Tuesday, surprise teams Anchovy High and Spot Valley were among teams that extended their winning starts to three straight, with wins over Cambridge High and Holland High, respectively.
Anju Barrett and Javiane Jarrett scored for Anchovy High as they stayed tied in the lead in Zone B with Frome Tech, who were 6-2 winners over Knockalva Technical.
Chrisano Lawrence scored a double for Spot Valley High and Leshen Forbes got the other to beat Holland High 3-2 to take over the lead in Zone D on nine points.
Kajaye Williams got a brace and Devardo Reid and Jadon Grey got one each for Mannings School in their 4-1 victory over Little London in Zone C; Munro College were 4-0 winners over Newell High, while Belair High outscored Mt St Joseph Catholic 4-3.
National Under-14 striker Carlando Morris scored his first goal in the daCosta Cup, while former champions Cornwall College beat Irwin High 1-0 and reclaimed their lead in Zone A, and Maldon High edged Herbert Morrison Technical 1-0.
This was Cornwall’s first win over Irwin High since the 2021 season.
Rusea’s High rebounded from their upset loss to Anchovy on Saturday to beat Green Island High 3-2 after trailing 2-1, while BB Coke beat former champions St Elizabeth Technical for the first time since 2015, winning 1-0 at the St Elizabeth Sports Complex.
Ferncourt High came from 0-2 down to earn a 2-2 draw against 10-man Marcus Garvey Technical in Zone K in which Browns Town got their first points of the season, beating York Castle High 1-0.
There were also big wins for Christiana High, who blanked Alston High 8-0, while Wycliffe Martin High hammered Iona High 11-0.
