Glenmuir, Happy Grove seek to extend daCosta leads
Runaway zone leaders Glenmuir High and Happy Grove will seek to widen their advantages when they take their four-game winning starts into the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition in games against Foga Road High and Yallahs High, respectively, today.
Three schools with perfect win records, including Anchovy High who have won their first three games, are down to play today when 10 games are scheduled to be contested.
Glenmuir High and Happy Grove High have both got off to fast starts and if they extend their winning runs today, would open up significant leads in their respective zones.
Glenmuir, coached by Andrew Peart, are last season’s Ben Francis Cup champions and daCosta Cup finalists. They have scored 35 goals in their four wins.
Today they take on a Foga Road team coming off their loss of the season which dropped them to fourth in Zone I on seven points, five behind Glenmuir.
Orane Watson scored six goals and Tajaun Cummings scored three times for Glenmuir to run roughshod over Winston Jones High in their last game and they will be on the hunt for more goals today at the expense of Foga Road.
Happy Grove High are still on course for another clean sweep of Zone L, dominating all their games and comes up against a Yallahs High team that lost their perfect win record earlier this week.
Happy Grove goes into the game with a five-point lead over Seaforth High and another win today would see them take a commanding lead as the competition nears the halfway stage of the first round.
Anchovy High have taken full advantage of back-to-back home games and could be tested when they travel to Green Island in Zone C, despite being two places and six points ahead of the Hanover-based school.
Green Island lost a first-half lead against Rusea’s High on Tuesday and lost 3-2. They will have to be at their best to fend off a well-drilled Anchovy High team that has conceded one goal in their three games played so far.
Christiana High and Bellefield, both tied for second on nine points, three behind leaders Holmwood Technical, will meet in a crucial Zone G game today.
Goal-difference separates the two teams but Christiana’s credentials are more impressive, scoring 18 times and yet to concede a goal while Bellefield High, who are trying to match last season’s total of four wins, has scored 10 goals and conceded six.
