Empowering Jamaica’s youth: 17-y-o’s vision for a brighter future
AT just 17 years old, Xavier Smith is starting to make waves in the world of philanthropy.
A passionate advocate for youth development, Xavier has launched the Our Youths, Our Future” webinar series, an initiative aimed at supporting at-risk youth in Jamaica. This series of five webinars targets youth, aged 15 to 18, providing them with essential tools, resources, and mentorship to excel academically, socially, and emotionally.
Currently studying abroad at Middlesex School, Xavier’s journey into philanthropy began at Campion College in Kingston, Jamaica. His international academic and intercultural experiences have enriched his perspective, which he eagerly shares with his peers.
It was at Campion College where Xavier first collaborated with a teacher to provide school supplies to students in Kingston’s Hannah Town community. This early experience ignited his passion for helping at-risk youth, leading to the creation of the webinar series.
“The challenges faced by today’s youth are unique and multifaceted,” said Xavier Smith. “Through this webinar series we aim to provide guidance on education, character development, emotional intelligence, and career exploration. Our goal is to inspire and empower youth to overcome difficulties and achieve their goals.”
The series began on July 29, 2023 and features successful professionals who share their experiences and strategies for overcoming adversity. To date, he has hosted four webinars with over 200 youth in attendance.
The inaugural session featured guest speaker Marcus Steele, who shared his journey from a challenging childhood in a volatile community to becoming a leading figure in the business world. Steele emphasised the power of resilience and education in achieving success.
“Resilience and education are key to overcoming life’s obstacles,” said Steele. “I hope my story can inspire these young individuals to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they may face.”
Another notable speaker, Nicolas Matthews, former CEO of Sportsmax Limited, discussed the role of mentorship and the importance of setting ambitious goals.
Raised by a single mother in rural Jamaica, Matthews highlighted how seeking inspiration and pushing beyond one’s comfort zone can lead to success.
“Mentorship has played a crucial role in my journey,” he said. “I believe that with the right guidance and support, these youth can achieve remarkable things.”
In the summer of 2024 Xavier was joined by Mkutani Shaw, an 18-year-old STEM student at Morant Bay High School, for a webinar focused on STEM. They discussed topics such as What is STEM,” “Why is STEM Important,” “Components of STEM,” “Real-Life Application of STEM,” “How STEM is Taught,” and “Careers in STEM.”
The series continues to provide valuable insights and motivation, helping youth envision and work towards a brighter future despite the challenges they face. Participants have included youth and adults from both Jamaica and Florida.
Feedback from participants has been positive, with many describing the series as life-changing, impactful, interesting, inspiring, and empowering.
Xavier’s dream is to see Jamaican youth living their purposes and rising to the top despite the odds and challenges they face. “Whatever the mind can conceive, you can achieve, especially with God by your side,” he reminded youth.
