Roman’s five-timer closes championship bid; Lewis hits 300 mark
RADDESH Roman strengthened his bid for a maiden jockeys’ championship title with an impressive five-win haul on the nine-race card at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Meanwhile, champion jockey Reyan Lewis shared the spotlight, reaching a milestone 300 career wins on the same day.
Roman’s standout win came aboard Major Danger in the $1.4-million Thunderbird feature race, an Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs (1,400m).
Trained by Philip Feanny, Major Danger won by three and three-quarter lengths ahead of stablemate Fearless Soul (Paul Francis) and Sensational Move (Richard Henry) in a time of 1:25.4 (24.0 x 46.2 x 1:12.2).
Roman’s other winners were Unbelievable Force in the second race for Feanny; Faith Downie in the sixth race for trainer Victor Williams; Pack Plays for trainer Ricardo Mathie in the seventh race; and James in the ninth and final event for trainer Spencer Chung.
With those winners, Roman took his tally to 95 winners — three behind leader Tevin Foster on 98 winners. Foster was winless on the day from six rides.
Lewis’s milestone achievement came in the fifth race aboard the Anthony Nunes-trained
Playfair. In the Restricted Allowance contest for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens) over six and a half furlongs (1,300m), Playfair dominated by three and three-quarter lengths.
Stablemate Smart Trick (Omar Walker) and Zulu Warrior (Tevin Foster) followed, with a winning time of 1:21.1 (23.0 x 47.4 x 1:15.0).
An elated Lewis shared his emotions with the Jamaica Observer.
“I’m feeling very happy at the moment,” he said. “I’m grateful and thankful for the continuous support from everyone — owners, trainers, fellow riders, grooms, and everybody who has backed me over the years.”
The action continues next weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
