Mona take Henriques Cup title, set sights on Alberga crown
Mona Prep continued their relentless title-winning ways after getting the better of Lannaman’s Prep 2-1 in the final of the JISA/Canopy Insurance Henriques Cup knockout football competition to successfully defend their title in an exciting showdown at Liberty Academy on Wednesday.
The team from Old Hope Road will now turn its attention to Saturday’s Alberga Cup final against Sts Peter and Paul, determined to secure another double title triumph in another highly-anticipated contest.
Mona’s Head Coach Alfred Nelson was proud of his team’s efforts and made it clear that his team was determined to again end the season with two titles.
“First and foremost, I must congratulate the boys for a hard-fought victory. The game was a pretty hard game, it was a final so we expected a tough game. We started the game well, went up 2-0 and contained them until a minute or so to go in the first half, so we knew the second half would be intense,” Nelson told the Jamaica Observer.
“This title means a lot, we were the defending champions so we went out there to really defend our title and we set that out as an objective at the start of the season. We are double champions, so we want to repeat. It’s been a long time and I can’t really think about any other prep school outside of Mona Prep back in the days to have done back-to-back doubles, so we set out this time around to see how best we can defend our title,” Nelson added.
“We are just being humble going about our business. Yes, we want to win the other title but we know it will not be easy. Our opponent is a very good team so we have to go and try our best and we know they are coming to try and dethrone us but we are going there ready to play, so it’s not really extra confidence from this win, but we know we have to be up to it,” said Nelson.
In the Henriques Cup third-place play-off, Sts Peter and Paul defeated Hillel Academy 3-0 in their tune-up for the league final, as they hunt what would be their first hold on the league title.
Saturday’s Alberga Cup finale will take place at AISK with Hillel Academy and El Instituto raising the curtains in the third-place play-offs before Mona and Sts Peter and Paul clash for the title, in a match-up that pits two of the league’s storied rivals.
