Organiser boasts ‘heightened interest’ in STETHS Invitational Meet
ORGANISERS of the 40th staging of the STETHS/Ollivierre/ Smith Invitational Meet are expecting another outstanding event, with a number of top schools and clubs set to compete when the meet gets underway at 9:00 am.
Forty-eight schools and clubs, including national high school champions Kingston College and Edwin Allen High, are set to take part in the meet. Neil Harrison, the meet director, told the Jamaica Observer on Friday they are ready for the first gun.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm from all stakeholders about the meet,” he said. “It feels like a renewal as there is a heightened interest, especially from the past students,” he added regarding the atmosphere.
The meet, which was renamed last year to honour past coaches Michael Ollivierre and the late Eldemire Smith, will feature events on the track and in the field. There is a sense that the field events, especially the throws, could grab the headlines.
World Under-20 leader Marla-Kay Lampart of Clarendon College, who threw a personal best and national junior record 15.98m to win the Class 1 Shot Put at the Central Hurdles, Relays, and Field Events meet at G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sport last week, is down to compete in the event.
In the Boys’ Class 1 event, Cornwall College’s Marlando Farquharson is set to defend his title. He is to face a tough field which is expected to include Munro College’s Devonte Edwards.
Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery, who won the Class 2 400m and Open 200m last year, has moved up to Class 1 and is expected to contest the 100m and 200m events.
