Triple-jumper Scott ecstatic after landing PB
Jamaican Jordan Scott says he is moving in “the right direction” after registering a personal best (PB) 17.34m (1.1m/s) to beat a quality field in the men’s triple jump at the Oslo Bislett Games in Norway, the sixth stop on the Wanda Diamond League series, on Thursday.
Scott, who was winning his second Diamond League this season, broke his previous best of 17.27m set when he won at the Xiamen Diamond League meeting in China in late April.
Olympic Games gold and silver medallist Pedro Pitchardo of Portugal was second with 17.06m (0.5m/s) with Germany’s Max Hess next with a wind-aided 16.96m (2.4m/s).
Scott said his coach had advised him that he needed “to get one in early as it was going to get cooler as the night wore on”, obliged in the first round and held on to win.
The three-time national champion Scott, who was fourth at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in March and is a former NCAA Indoor champion, added: “To jump another PB so early in the season is pleasing, as it shows everything is coming together and I am moving in the right direction.”
He said the Paris Diamond League on June 20, a week before the Jamaica Athletics Championships, is next on the horizon for him.
“I need to recover for that and work on a few things but mostly it is just keeping my body fit and ready. I do not plan much further ahead than that to be honest, I will just see how the season develops,” he explained.
Olympic Games and World Championships silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts was second in the women’s triple jump, while Olympic Games and World Championships finalist Ackelia Smith finished sixth.
Ricketts, the number two ranked female triple jumper in the world who was coming off a win in the previous Diamond League meeting, in Rome, moved up one place from third to second on her final jump with a 14.57m (0.0m/s).
“I certainly left it late today but I got there in the end and Id had a couple of good jumps in the mix” she said, adding she was returning home to prepare for the national championships.
She said: “Then a couple more Diamond Leagues before the World Champs [in September]. The season has started quite well for me so I need to just keep jumping well and I will be confident for Tokyo.”
Smith jumped a season’s best14.26m (0.5m/s) for sixth place as Cuba’s world leader Leyanis Perez Hernandez rebounded from her loss to Ricketts in their last meeting, winning with 14.72m (1.7m/s) while American Jasmine Moore was third with 14.41n (-0.1m/s).
