Rideallday steals show at Mouttet Mile
IN a heart-stopping, magnificent run in deep stretch that will be remembered by racing fans for years to come, Rideallday, trained by Philip Feanny, got the better of rivals to win the prestigious Mouttet Mile (invitational) at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The stage was set for a thrilling showdown, with a US$300,000 ($45-million) purse on the line — the largest in the English-speaking Caribbean. The atmosphere was electrifying, and the stakes had never been higher. Nobody was giving anything away, but the enthusiasm was apparent.
Those in attendance were filled with anticipation, sensing that they were about to witness something truly special. And special it was as Rideallday, ridden by international jockey Javier Castellano, romped home by nine lengths in the Graded Stakes contest for three-year-olds and upward over one mile. Foreigner invaders Nautical Star and Dothraki, despite all the hype around them, gave nothing and finished off the board.
Owned by Cassiopeia Racing INC, Rideallday (Vekoma – Song of Hours) stopped the clock in 1:36.40 (23.1 x 45.0 x 1:10.0) minutes.
“It feels really good to be here in Jamaica for the first time and enjoying this wonderful atmosphere; it then became more special when I won the big race on the day. It was a wonderful feeling and I am happy to be here,” Castellano told the Sunday Observer.
Rideallday’s start was not ideal but the three-year-old, American-bred grey/roan colt settled in mid-pack down the backstretch. Legacy Isle, ridden by the visiting Emisael Jaramillo, led Pack Plays (Christopher Mamdeen), Dothraki (Jerome Innis), and Main Mistress (Ismael Velasquez) easily from the break.
Castellona bided his time effectively on Rideallday, taking his time getting the far-striding colt into his rhythm as they settled in fourth position ahead into the half-mile (800m) turn. Rideallday moved into serious contention when he slipped down into second place behind Legacy Isle approaching the distance.
Rideallday unleashed a powerful kick in deep stretch and powered away from rivals to win easily at the wire. Legacy Isle, who finished second to Funcaandun last year, had to settle for second place once again. Funcaandun failed to defend his crown but did enough to finish third.
The US$100,000 ($15-million) Bruceontheloose Sprint Trophy was won in fine style by the Anthony Nunes-conditioned Of A Revolution.
The six-year-old, American-bred, chestnut horse Of A Revolution, ridden by Raddesh Roman, won the Graded Stakes contest for three-year-olds and upward over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) by two and a quarter lengths. He defeated Gary Subratie’s pair of Money Market (Dane Dawkins) and Desert of Malibu (Dane Nelson) in a time of 1:19.20 minutes.
Blue Vinyl, trained by Subratie and ridden by Roman, won the US$40,000 ($6-million) Chairman’s Plate, an Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m). The winning time was 1:57.20.
The action continues at the weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
