The Jamaican racing community is in mourning following the sudden passing of long-time owner and breeder Desmond Lewis on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Affectionately known as Dessie, Lewis raced under the banner of DTSL & Associates and was serving as an executive member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) at the time of his death.

A regular fixture in the winners’ enclosure, Lewis’s passion for the sport of kings was evident every race day. His silks were carried to victory as recently as May 16, 2026, when Delightful One, conditioned by Oraldo Chin and ridden by Tevin Foster, scored in convincing fashion.

Over the years, Lewis celebrated success with a host of notable runners. Among them were Brenda Boy,
A Gift From Ben, Faith Downie, King Antholew, and Waterman — horses that brought him joy and earned him respect across the industry.

Beyond his success as an owner, Lewis was admired for his leadership and commitment to the growth of racing. His role on TOBA’s executive reflected a drive to strengthen the industry, advocate for fellow owners and breeders, and mentor the next generation.

In a poignant twist, two of Lewis’s horses were set to race on Sunday. Delightful One ran in the fourth race while maiden Time And Patience competed in the sixth event. Both horses are trained by Oraldo Chin and were ridden by jockey Tevin Foster.

The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide team extends deepest condolence to Lewis’s family, friends, and colleagues.

The racing community has lost a stalwart. From the paddock to the executive boardroom, Lewis gave his time, resources, and heart to the sport he loved.
