African-Jamaican Connexion to raise funds for sick women
EFFORTS are underway to help women suffering from endometriosis and fibroids.
The outreach arm of the Women’s Health Network (WHN) is seeking to raise funds to purchase a mammography machine and ultrasound unit in order to better help needy women across the island.
To this end, the WHN has organised African-Jamaican Connexion — a concert featuring South African singer Lorraine Klaasen as well as local performers Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffith, Shuga, Nikeisha Barnes, Desi Jones and Friends, as well as dance company L’Acadco. The event is set for tomorrow evening at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.
Mowatt told the Jamaica Observer yesterday that she was only too pleased to be asked to perform on this show, the proceeds of which, she noted, go to such a worthy cause.
“I felt really privileged to be asked. Over the years a number of my songs have been geared towards the experiences of women and so I see this as a perfect fit. If I can help women alleviate some of the illnesses which affect them, then I would be playing my part,” Mowatt remarked.
Mowatt said patrons at the concert can look forward to a great performance, including her popular anthem for women,
Black Woman.
The outreach programme for the WHN assists less fortunate women suffering from certain illnesses. The group has facilitated 800 surgeries, including Caesarian sections and the removal of fibroids, for women in St Elizabeth and St Mary.
