How safe are roots tonic drinks?
Q: Dear Donovan,
I was told that roots tonic drinks will help to reduce my fatigue and increase my virility. How safe are these drinks?
A: Roots tonics have for a long time been a part of our grass roots Jamaican culture. These tonics have also long been touted to prevent or cure many illnesses, along with their ability to increase stamina and virility. Many of these tonics are made from herbs whose names are as exotic as some of the uses of these tonics. For example, some of the roots used to make these tonics include chaney root, sarsaparilla, hug me tight, raw moon, medina and others. It is a known fact that many Jamaicans will swear by these root tonics to increase their stamina and virility. However, I have not seen any credible scientific study to prove these points.
But many of these herbs do have properties which could make them suited for these purposes. Chaney root, for example, is high in iron. It is also good at cleansing and strengthening the blood. People suffering from anaemia and low blood count would benefit from drinking this herb. Additionally, sarsaparilla has good detoxing and anti-inflammatory properties. Also, it contains vitamins A, B complex, C and D, along with the minerals iron, manganese, sodium, silicon, sulphur, copper, zinc and iodine.
Zinc has testosterogenic properties, which makes it useful for impotence. It also increases the production of testosterone, which helps in building and maintaining sexual desire in both men and women. Zinc also helps to boost the circulation of blood around the body.
The B complex present in sarsaparilla also aids in energy production. In terms of these herbal tonics being healthy, I have not seen any study to show that they are not. However, like any other thing, too much of one thing is good for nothing. I would suggest that if you really want to increase your stamina and virility, make sure you eat properly, exercise, get enough rest and manage your stress levels.
