Severing all ties
AFTER a relationship ends, people usually want to cut all ties, and move on without a backward glance. But sometimes there are strings that can’t be severed – like children you have together, or other issues that reduce the possibility of making a clean break.
What’s the one thing that’s still keeping you connected to your ex?
Kenroy:
When I broke up with my ex, she used my sons as a means of supporting her new lover. I would give her a certain amount of money for the boys, but she always kept asking me for more. And whenever I got my sons every other weekend they looked like they needed care. So one day I questioned them, only to find out that there were days that they didn’t even go to school. When I would give her money to take them out for pizza or whatever they wanted, she wouldn’t get them a thing. They weren’t even going to karate or any extras because she told them she didn’t have any money. I confronted her about it, and the long and short of it is that I now have my sons.
Jennifer:
My ex disowned his daughter, the same child whom he loved during the time we were together. Once we broke up he stopped supporting her. He told me that the only way he would help me with her is if I took him back. He made my life hell but I didn’t buckle, I didn’t bend. He broke my heart, not by what he was doing to me, but what he was doing to his daughter. Well, it’s been nearly two years and we are still surviving without him.
Colleen:
My husband got my cousin pregnant but I didn’t know. I took her in because her mother had just migrated and she was still in college. Her mother, who is my aunt, asked me if she could stay with me and I said yes, no problem. She was with me for a year, everything was going great, then she started to give attitude, nothing but back-talk and not doing what she was asked to do. As a mother I know that kids can act up, but she wasn’t a child, she was almost 21. Anyway I found out that she was pregnant and that was the last straw for me. I told my aunt that I was going to put her out. I was putting up with too much to turn around and now have to deal with her being pregnant. She moved to my grandmother’s house and my husband would go there from time to time to visit her and I would buy things for the baby for him to take to her. I wouldn’t go because I had washed my hands off the situation. Anyway, my aunt started to file for her and the baby, and that was when it was revealed that my husband was on the child’s birth certificate as the father. I was beyond livid. I kicked him out immediately, without hesitation. The only time I see him is when he stops by to see our children. He has apologised countless times, but I don’t want to hear any of that because he’s not sorry. The first child is now four years old and she is again pregnant for him. Her mother is no longer filing for her. I don’t care about any of them. I just want a divorce and I’ll be fine.
